But I'd been feeling overwhelmed and pretty defeated.  I didn't necessarily feel like dying - but I'd been feeling a lot like not being alive.  The second reason I decide to get ECT is that I was depressed.  Profoundly depressed.  Part of this could be attributed to my mood disorder, which was, no doubt, probably the source of the emotional intensity.  That's what can take simple sadness and turn it into sadness squared.

2003 秋天

再旁邊的人整個人的氛圍有點像英國的家庭教師。她身穿灰色窄裙，白色襯衫和毛線背心。白襯衫的小圓領上鑲著精巧的蕾絲，領口別了一個浮雕的胸針。現在已經不流行浮雕胸針了，她的打扮有一種復古味。不過，我的衣著在別人眼中也很古怪，牛仔褲搭配了一件印度刺繡上衣，腳上趿著在西友超市買的五百圓脫鞋。以前路上找不到像我這種老女人，我相信自己全身都散發出獨居老人的氣場。明天相同的時間來這裡，搞不好可以再看到這幾張老面孔。這裡的每個人都不和別人聊天，我沒來由地湧起渾身的力量。我們生活在史無前例的長壽社會，沒有生存方式的範本可供參考，必須在黑暗中摸索，首先要開發吃早餐的方法，然後各自做出選擇。

2004 春天

雖然我不是故意的，但到乃乃子家時，剛好是晚餐時間。乃乃子是重度身障者，所以晚餐由她老公沛沛雄負責。她老公對廚房工具很講究，也很執著，特地去訂製了可以放各種不同刀具的箱子，箱子上有好幾個扁扁的抽屜。如果小偷想要來偷竊，根本不必帶兇器，只要去他家廚房找一把大菜刀，就可以把五臟六腑都挖出來。

2004 夏天

我在便利商店看到一張似曾相識的臉。那個老爹正在收銀台付煙錢，看到我笑了笑。我太驚訝了，原來是文具店的老闆。通常店員離開那家店，即使在路上遇到，也會一時想不起來對方到底是誰。太驚訝了，原來那個老闆居然會笑！然後，他就像正常人一樣親切地對我說：今天真熱啊。我雖然驚魂未定，但仍然故作鎮定地回答：今年的天氣很不正常呢。老闆探出身體，向收銀台的女生指出萬寶路涼煙的位置，「那個，不是那個，是再右邊那個。」更令人驚訝的是，當他走到門口時，還向我揮了揮手。

真傷腦筋。當初是因為他經常不給別人好臉色看，讓人膽顫心驚，可以激發我的勇氣，所以才喜歡他的。

走回家的路上，我覺得喪失了活下去的勇氣。

洗完澡後，就上床睡覺了。

2006 冬天

桃子很生氣，雖然她的聲音和電話中一樣，但我知道她在生氣，我也很生氣。「搞什麼嘛，我最無法原諒的就是那些腦袋空空的小女生，裝出一副很內行的樣子，用可愛的語氣說什麼‘這種溫順的口感’或是‘調味很銳利’之類的屁話。那種年輕小女生懂什麼美食。」

「對啊，她們連地瓜葉都沒吃過，有什麼資格說美食。洋子，你也沒吃過地瓜葉吧？」

「開什麼玩笑，我還吃過麥麩呢。桃子，你沒吃過麥麩丸子吧？」

桃子有點不甘心地說：「我倒是真的沒吃過。」

我有一種勝利的喜悅。「爛地瓜發黒的地方也很難吃。」

我們停止戰爭，開始走共鳴路線。「還有地瓜粉做的地瓜圓，外面是看起來髒兮兮的淡綠色，有點透明，我這輩子再也不想吃那種東西。」

「呵呵呵。」

桃子的笑聲很可愛，笑容更可愛。

「我第一次吃霜淇淋時，還以為自己在做夢。銀座有一家美軍商店，只有那裡有賣。當時我月薪才十五圓，一給霜淇淋就要八圓。」桃子從年輕時就很有魄力。「我當時想，原來我們在吃這種東西的國家打仗，難怪會輸。」

桃子對吃的東西很執著。

他們最喜歡的事就是摔跤比賽，這是針對更為艱難危險的舞刀節的前期訓練。比賽絕對公正的，但很艱苦，都是村與村之間進行比賽，從來不與自己村的選手比賽。還有大型的比賽盛會，這時三個村落都會選送他們最好的選手出賽，這是部落的一個古老傳統。這種節慶活動與他們的愛情生活有密切關係。越是優秀的選手，獲得青睞的機會就越多。獲勝者會得到很高的聲譽，甚至已婚的婦女若想和他有個孩子，也會願意與他過夜。在這種情況下丈夫會表示理解，將孩子視如己出。在平時，婚姻是遵循嚴格法規的，如果一個男人想和一個女人結婚，他必須在女孩家裡的田地做上八年工作，直到結婚。儘管管束很嚴，但自由戀愛的風氣還是很盛，然而卻不能公開，與馬薩金努巴人一樣。
